Vikram Sarabhai Biography: If Vikram Sarabhai is called the father of India’s space programs, then there will be no exaggeration. He was not only a great scientist but also a social worker. Today the entire functioning of Indian television is based on space science. He will always be remembered for the work that Vikram Sarabhai did to connect Doordarshan to space.
Dr. Vikram Sarabhai was born on 12 August 1919 in Gujarat. His father Ambalal Sarabhai was a famous businessman. Apart from getting his early education at home, he also got special education in horticulture, technical, language, science, dance, music, painting photography etc. Dr. Sarabhai (Vikram Sarabhai) after graduating from Ahmedabad College, passed the examination in Natural Science from St. John’s College, Cambridge in 1939.
On his return to India, he continued to work on space science with Chandrasekhar Venkataraman and Homi Jehangir Bhabha. He was married to the famous dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai, from whom the only daughter Mallika Sarabhai was born. Along with being a skilled dancer, she also holds a special place in the field of acting. In 1942, presented a paper on the intensity and change of space rays. He went to Cambridge again in 1945.
In 1947, after completing his Ph.D., he did research work in Cavendish and Cambridge laboratories. After that, Physics Research Laboratory was established in Ahmedabad for the study of outer and inner space. As a director till 1965, he gave impetus to the space program in his laboratory. In 1955, Space Study Centers were also established at Gulmarg, Thiruvananthapuram and Kodaikanal in Kashmir. While working as the President of Space Research Organization, he launched Rohini Maneka and Aryabhata satellite in 1975.
Sarabhai (Vikram Sarabhai) did research work related to the atmospheric magnetism of the Earth and the Sun, the position of the Sun, etc. He established many industries in Gujarat and other areas of the country, in which Sarabhai Engineering, Research Center, Operation Research Group, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Center etc. He was also the chairman of the General Conference of the Space Atomic Energy Agency. He was also honored with Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award and Padma Bhushan. Dr. Sarabhai (Vikram Sarabhai) merged into the Panchatattva on 30 December 1971.

Today, more than 70 percent of the village population of India is taking advantage of Doordarshan service in their homes. All the credit for this goes to Sarabhai (Vikram Sarabhai). Through Doordarshan, rural people are getting benefited in all fields like education, agriculture, development, entertainment, sports, medicine, social reforms etc. All the labor behind him is of Sarabhai (Vikram Sarabhai). His love for Indian culture was very deep. He died suddenly during the launch of Thumba rocket. His work will continue to inspire young scientists to come.
