Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Biography: Dr. Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar was a great scientist, a high official of the Central Government of India. He has been able to become a great person even after being born in an ordinary family, so his life can give the work of guiding us especially.
Dr. Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Childhood and Education
He was born on 21 February 1894 at a place called Bhera in Punjab. His father was a teacher in DAV School Lahore. In the form of peace, his father died in his childhood and he was brought up by his maternal grandfather and his father’s friend Lala Raghunath Sahai. Shanti Swarup had a sharp intellect since childhood. He used to ask so many questions to the teachers that the poor teacher used to get annoyed. Little did he know that the same Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar would grow up to be a great person.
He did M.Sc. Passed the examinations in India itself and passed first class in almost all. Soon he got married to the daughter of his patron, La. Raghunath Sahay. Shri Bhatnagar wanted to get further education but he did not have enough money to go to Vilayat. Seeing his sharp intellect and ability, Dayal Singh College gave him a scholarship and sent him to Vilayat to get higher education.
A deserving student takes his place everywhere. Even in Vilayat, his professors were so impressed by him that an institution there gave a monthly scholarship of Rs.300 to Mr. Bhatnagar. He was famous for removing hair in classical education, as well as establishing contact with world famous scientists and doing new experiments of science, he was not second to anyone. Thus he obtained the degree of Doctor of Science from the University of London in 1921.

On his return from England, Shri Bhatnagar (Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar) was appointed Professor of Chemistry by the Banaras Hindu University for Rs 500 per month. He used to do scientific research in his spare time and send his details to the famous scientific journals of England for publication. Due to this his fame spread abroad as well. For this reason, he also went abroad to attend the scientific meeting to be held in Liverpool.

On his return from there, Punjab University appointed him as the Director of Chemistry on a monthly salary of Rs 1250. He took full advantage of this auspicious opportunity to do scientific research and made many important discoveries related to business. People like Sir Ganga Ram and Shri Birla Seth used to come to consult him. The income from this work would have been used for the advancement of the university.
Scientific Research
Shri Bhatnagar (Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar) did many important research related to physico-chemistry. He discovered many things about the composition and formation of molecules, found a method to know the species of emulsion. In this way he made many original inventions, but the research which made him so popular is many useful and practical research of industrial importance.

Two of these are particularly noteworthy, one is to increase the light power of kerosene and the other is to prepare odorless wax. On the basis of his first discovery, the Attock Oil Company of Punjab started making profit of lakhs of rupees. Shri Bhatnagar invented the method of making fake pashmina silk by using what was earlier thrown in the karkhanas as garbage. Their research is of special importance in the manufacture of vegetable oils, soap dyes and artificial rice. Shri Bhatnagar (Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar) died on 01 January 1955 at the age of 60 due to heart attack in New Delhi.
